Who is behind Corporate Translations:

A university-trained and Bavarian-State examined linguist (English and French Linguistics) - the hub of the translation business -

and a panel of university-trained experts from various technical fields who work in top positions in industry or research - the spikes of our wheel, if you will, on whose expert advice the translator can always fall back - namely: a biologist, a medical doctor and researcher, an analytical chemist, an electronics engineer, a hydraulics engineer, a physicist and IC-specialist, a physicist and astronomer, an economist, an accountant and a computer specialist.

All the actual translation work is done by the linguist - if there is no translation capacity to do your job, or if it is beyond the grasp of our competence, we will tell you right away - but WE NEVER EVER SUBCONTRACT WORK. Which means that we assume the responsibility for every jot of the translation, from alpha to omega.

Quality assurance:

Consistency

We do not use automated translation equipment (not to mention machine translation programmes), but we draw up lists of terminology, that we can take out of the electronic drawer, whenever you require a new version of a text - consistency guaranteed. And we align our old translations (i.e. we transfer them into simple spreadsheets, sentence by sentence, with the French or English sentence on one side, and its German equivalent on the other), which, too, helps in maintaining our top goal of consistency.

Accuracy

This should go without saying, of course. At Corporate Translations, typical translation takes four steps:

1) Consulting similar texts in the target language (German);

2) Terminology research - Looking up all the vocabulary needed, checking whether it really fits the context as well as the intended audience and style of the document. All the vocabulary research is done by the linguist, but whenever he has the slightest doubt, he will consult the panel of experts. And only after Corporate Translations has done everything in their power to resolve a problem, will we bother our client. We are fully aware that by outsourcing translation jobs, many of our clients want to save that most precious of all commodities: TIME - We will not waste yours by asking you long and confused lists of vocabulary or technical questions, if we can resolve them on our own, but whenever we cannot resolve a point, we will definitely not brush over it - for RELIABLE QUALITY and TRUST are central to all business relations.

3) The actual typing of the translation, which is done by the linguist, preferably typing over the source language text in a copy of the original file. That makes sure that your format will be respected and that nothing will be left out.

4) After the typing is completed, we prefer to let your translation mature for 6 hours to one day, like dough for good bread. What may sound like a waste of time, really makes sure that the proofreading is done with fresh eyes. Every text is proofread twice at least, checking for accuracy, consistency of terminology, completeness, spelling and punctuation. The second proofreading is done with the help of or by the technical expert for the field.
It goes without saying that we use spellcheckers for reformed German orthography; we also handle Swiss German spelling and (on demand) pre-reform spelling.

What we expect from our clients:

Fair deadlines - count a maximum of 4500 words per day (ideally 3000), please. For any jobs that surpass 5000 words per day, there is an express supplement of 20%.

Source text on file - While we do not refuse faxed source text, we largely prefer working on files: It benefits speed, accuracy and makes formatting a lot easier. As German words are considerably longer than English or French ones and as our price is based on a word count in the source language, there is a 15% supplement on the German word count, if we have to deal with faxed originals.

Proofread source texts - While we do of course signal to our clients anything that is probably or definitely a mistake or a terminological inconsistency in their original, any such procedure means a huge loss of time for both sides - so please check any text thoroughly before submitting it for translation.

Background material - Please submit as much for us to base our translation on, as you can: Earlier translations, glossaries, German documentation from the same or adjacent fields. This is not simply because we want life to be easier for us, but because it is the only way one can assure to respect the terminological conventions, or often more basically: the names attributed to, say, certain machine parts within a company.

Technical contact person - Please name a technical expert inside your company (preferably in its German branch, if there is one) to whom we can address technical questions that we are not able to resolve on our own - this will always be a last resort only, but in the event of an emergency, it is crucial to have a contact handy.

Specify the target audience - For a translation (any text, in fact) to be adequate it is crucial that the translator should know who he is writing for. So please provide us a brief sketch as to who will be the audience and what the intended purpose of your text.

Feedback - Please don't hesitate one moment, if ever any of our work should give rise to complaints - we will remedy the problem within hours. If you submit any of our work to third party proofreading, please send the result back to us, too, so that we can react to the comments and/or correction suggestions. Finally, please send us printed material, once the translation we have done for you has been published - you will be reimbursed for your expenses via a deduction from the current or a future invoice.
